What To Do When You Feel Completely Stuck in Life

There are times in life when you simply don't know what to do next.
You may have a job that no longer feels right, a relationship you're questioning, a decision you've been putting off, or a growing feeling that the life you're living isn't quite the life you want anymore.
Sometimes nothing is obviously wrong. You may even have many things to be grateful for. Yet something inside you is saying:
“I can't carry on like this, but I don't know what I want instead.”
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone — and feeling stuck doesn't mean you've failed.
Often, it means something in your life is asking to be looked at differently.
Why Feeling Stuck in Life Happens
Feeling stuck can happen for many reasons.
You might have spent years making decisions based on what was expected of you. You may have prioritised work, family or other people's needs and gradually lost sight of what you want for yourself.
Sometimes we're stuck because we're afraid of making the wrong decision.
Sometimes we're waiting for certainty before we take action — when in reality, certainty often comes after we begin moving.
And sometimes we're simply tired. When you've been dealing with change, pressure or disappointment for a long time, it can be difficult to see beyond your immediate circumstances.
The first step isn't necessarily to make a huge decision.
It's to understand what is really going on.
Start by asking yourself some honest questions
When you feel completely stuck, try stepping away from the pressure to immediately find an answer.
Instead, ask yourself:
What part of my life feels most uncomfortable right now?
What have I been putting off?
If I wasn't worried about what other people thought, what would I change?
What am I staying with simply because it feels safe?
What do I miss about the person I used to be?
What would I like more of in my life?
What would I like less of?
If nothing changed over the next two years, how would I feel?
You don't have to answer all of these at once.
Sometimes one question can be enough to start something shifting.
Don't assume you have to change everything
When you're unhappy with your life, it's tempting to think you need a complete reinvention.
You might imagine quitting your job, moving house, ending a relationship or starting an entirely new life.
Sometimes a major change really is needed.
But sometimes what you need is much smaller.
Perhaps you need a different role rather than a completely different career.
Perhaps you need stronger boundaries rather than a new relationship.
Perhaps you need time for yourself, a new challenge, more creativity or something that belongs entirely to you.
Before making a dramatic decision, ask:
That can be a much more manageable place to begin.
Give yourself permission to consider a different future
One of the hardest things about feeling stuck is believing that the life you have is the life you have to keep.
It isn't.
People change careers, relationships, priorities and ambitions throughout their lives.
You are allowed to discover that something which once mattered to you no longer does.
You are allowed to want something different.
And you are allowed to start again.
You don't need to know exactly where you're going before you take the first step.
Sometimes you simply need to know what direction feels more right than where you are now.
What if you genuinely don't know what you want?
This is where talking things through can be incredibly useful.
A conversation with someone impartial can help you hear your own thoughts more clearly. Sometimes saying something out loud makes you realise that you already know more than you thought you did.
Writing things down can help too.
Try creating two lists:
What is working in my life?
and
What isn't working anymore?
Don't judge your answers.
Then look for patterns.
Are several of the things that aren't working connected to the same area of your life?
Are there things you've been tolerating for a long time?
Are there things you've repeatedly said you'd like to change but never allowed yourself to explore?
Those patterns can tell you a great deal.
Could Tarot help when you're feeling stuck?
Tarot isn't about handing someone a predetermined future.
A good Tarot reading can give you another way of looking at the situation you're experiencing.
The cards can help you explore the influences surrounding a situation, the choices available to you and possibilities you may not have considered.
For someone who feels stuck, that different perspective can be valuable.
You might arrive with a very specific question.
Or you might simply know:
“Something needs to change and I don't know where to start.”
That's enough.
The purpose isn't to make the decision for you.
It's to give you an opportunity to step back, explore what's happening and consider what you want to do next.
You don't have to have your whole life worked out
Perhaps the most important thing to remember when you're feeling stuck is that you don't have to solve everything today.
You only need to find your next step.
That might be having a difficult conversation.
Updating your CV.
Researching a new career.
Taking some time for yourself.
Setting a boundary.
Asking for help.
Or simply admitting to yourself that you aren't happy with something anymore.
Small steps can create movement.
And movement creates possibilities.
If you're feeling stuck, uncertain or at a crossroads
If you're at a point in your life where you don't know what comes next, a Tarot reading can offer a different perspective on the situation you're facing.
I offer personalised Tarot readings online, by telephone and in person in Heald Green, Manchester, with sessions designed around the circumstances and questions that matter to you.
You don't need to arrive with all the answers.
Sometimes you simply need somewhere to start.
